Formex Essence 39: Enhanced Movement and Fresh Color Options

Formex Refines the Essence 39

Formex, known for its technical prowess and accessible pricing, has unveiled a significant update to its popular Essence 39 model. The new iteration features an upgraded movement and a palette of fresh dial colors, reinforcing the collection's standing as a go-to for enthusiasts seeking Swiss precision without the premium markup.

Movement Upgrade: More Than Just a Name

The heart of the updated Essence 39 is a revised automatic caliber, now boasting a 72-hour power reserve—a substantial improvement over its predecessor. This enhanced movement, still chronometer-certified by the COSC, ensures accuracy within -4 to +6 seconds per day. The longer power reserve is a practical boon for daily wear, allowing the watch to sit idle over a weekend without needing a wind.

Visible through the sapphire caseback, the movement is decorated with Geneva stripes and features a custom rotor with the Formex logo. The finish, while not haute horlogerie, is clean and attractive at this price point.

Fresh Colors for Every Taste

The new color options breathe life into the Essence 39 lineup. Alongside the existing black and silver dials, Formex introduces a sunray-brushed blue, a deep green, and a warm champagne tone. Each dial is protected by a double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, ensuring legibility in all lighting conditions.

The applied indices and hands are filled with Super-LumiNova, providing excellent nighttime visibility. The date window at 6 o'clock maintains the dial's symmetry, a signature of the Essence line.

Design and Wearability

The 39mm stainless steel case retains its distinctive integrated lugs with a quick-release system, allowing for effortless strap changes without tools. The case is a mix of brushed and polished surfaces, giving it a versatile look that dresses up or down. Water resistance remains at 100 meters, suitable for swimming but not diving.

The bracelet, a hallmark of Formex, features a tool-free micro-adjustable clasp, a feature rarely found at this price. The H-link design is comfortable and tapers elegantly from 20mm to 16mm.

Buying Considerations

At its price point, the Formex Essence 39 offers exceptional value. The upgraded movement, versatile design, and high-quality bracelet make it a strong contender against Swiss rivals from Longines or Oris. However, note that Formex is a direct-to-consumer brand, so you won't find it in brick-and-mortar boutiques; purchases are made online with a 24-month international warranty.

Given its popularity, resale value holds relatively well, but this is a watch to keep and enjoy. For those new to the brand, the Essence 39 is an excellent entry point into the world of Swiss chronometers.
