Zenith Chronomaster Solo Sport: A Time-Only Tribute to the El Primero Legacy

A New Chapter for the El Primero

Since 1969, Zenith's El Primero has been a cornerstone of horology, renowned as the first automatic chronograph movement with an integrated high-frequency calibre. Now, Zenith channels this legendary engineering into a time-only format for the first time in the Chronomaster collection with the new Solo Sport models.

The Solo Sport strips away the chronograph complexity to focus on the essence of the movement, offering a clean three-hand display that feels less sporty than its chronograph siblings. Yet, it retains the design language that makes it unmistakably part of the Chronomaster family.

Design and Build

Measuring 40mm, the Solo Sport sits comfortably between the 37mm vintage-inspired models and the 41mm sport chronographs. The case is paired with a ceramic unidirectional bezel, available in four versions: white, black, brown, and a no-date black variant. The dials feature a distinctive 'Z' pattern, engraved on either a sunray-finished white ceramic or polished black/brown ceramic surfaces, echoing the brand's identity.

The 'Z' motif is repeated on the seconds hand, while a 'shark tooth' minute track at the periphery adds a sharp, angular contrast to the smooth curves of the case and bracelet. This design choice pays homage to historical Zenith references, providing a modern yet nostalgic feel.

The Zenclasp Bracelet

Each Solo Sport comes on a three-link bracelet fitted with Zenith's new Zenclasp folding clasp, first seen earlier this year. This clasp is ergonomically designed with smooth lines for wrist comfort, featuring a safety-lock system and an integrated micro-adjustment mechanism that allows for on-the-fly resizing in 2.5mm increments, up to a total of 10mm. This focus on bracelet comfort and adjustability reflects a growing trend in the industry towards holistic watch design.

Movement: The Heart of the Watch

Powering the Solo Sport is the El Primero calibre 3620, an automatic manufacture movement that operates at a high frequency of 5 Hz (36,000 VpH), a hallmark of the El Primero since its inception. Modern upgrades include a silicon escapement, a stop-seconds function, and a bidirectional winding system with a star-shaped rotor, ensuring precision and reliability.

Availability and Pricing

The four versions of the Chronomaster Solo Sport are available now as part of Zenith's permanent collection. Prices start at ,800 for the no-date model and rise to ,900 for the date versions. For those interested, this model offers a fresh take on a classic movement, appealing to both collectors and newcomers alike.

When considering a purchase, it's essential to buy from authorized dealers to ensure authenticity, especially given the popularity of El Primero-based models. The Solo Sport's unique combination of heritage and innovation makes it a compelling addition to any collection.
