Rolex Certified Pre-Owned Watches: What You Need to Know

Rolex Enters the Pre-Owned Market

In December 2022, Rolex announced that it would begin selling certified pre-owned watches through designated retailers. This marked a significant step for the brand, which had previously focused exclusively on new watches. The decision was driven by the booming second-hand luxury watch market, projected to reach billion by 2030. Rolex, as the largest Swiss watch manufacturer by volume, has a massive presence in the secondary market, and this move allows the brand to participate more directly in that lucrative segment.

What Does Rolex Certified Pre-Owned Mean?

Rolex's Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program is designed to address common concerns among pre-owned watch buyers: authenticity, condition, and warranty. Each watch sold under this program undergoes rigorous inspection by Rolex-trained technicians to ensure it meets original factory specifications. The watch is then issued a "Certified Pre-Owned" tag and comes with a two-year international warranty from the date of purchase. It is presented in a dedicated pouch along with care and warranty booklets.

Where Can You Buy Rolex Certified Pre-Owned Watches?

Initially, the program is available only through select authorized retailers, with Bucherer being the first partner. The service launched in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France, Denmark, and the UK, with plans to expand to more countries after 2023. Like new Rolex watches, CPO timepieces are not sold online; customers must visit physical stores to make a purchase. However, price information is available on retailer websites, and USATWO Watches has added a pre-owned price database for Rolex models to help buyers make informed decisions.

Which Models Are Included?

Rolex's CPO program focuses on "vintage" models—those that have been out of production for at least three years and are no longer listed on the official Rolex website. This distinction prevents overlap with current models and helps maintain the value of new watches. For example, the iconic "Hulk" Submariner Ref. 116610LV, produced from 2010 to 2020, is available through the program. In contrast, the "Milgauss" Ref. 116400GV, introduced in 2007, remains on the official site and is therefore not eligible.

Impact on the Secondary Market

Rolex's CPO pricing strategy is twofold: it reflects current market values while also influencing them. By setting official prices for pre-owned models, Rolex effectively caps the price range for these watches in the secondary market, acting as a reference point. This move gives Rolex more control over pricing and signals to consumers that some level of premium over the original retail price is acceptable. For instance, the CPO price for the Hulk Ref. 116610LV is CHF 24,000, significantly higher than its last retail price of USD 9,550. Similarly, the "Batman" GMT-Master II Ref. 116710BLNR is priced at CHF 21,000. These official prices provide transparency and legitimize the premiums seen in the market.

What This Means for Buyers

For buyers, the CPO program offers a safer way to purchase pre-owned Rolex watches, with guaranteed authenticity and a warranty. It also provides a clear price benchmark, reducing the uncertainty often associated with second-hand transactions. However, the program is not without limitations: it is only available at select physical locations, and the selection is limited to discontinued models. As the program expands, it may have a broader impact on the pre-owned market, potentially stabilizing prices and increasing consumer confidence.
